With the birth of his two children, and marrying Kim Kardashian, it seemed that Yeezus had finally began settling down. He had not made any obnoxious displays of Kanye-ness in a while and his new songs, “Facts” and “Real Friends” were delicious appetizers to the release of his upcoming album, dated to drop on Feb. 11.
2016 did see a rise in West’s use of Twitter, mostly for promoting his new songs and album. At 8:44 p.m. on Jan. 26, 2016, West announced on Twitter he would be changing the name of his upcoming album from Swish to WAVES, then promptly uploaded a picture of the handwritten track listing and the new title scribbled above.
Khalifa responded at 9:37 p.m. saying, “Max B is the wavy one. He created the wave. There is no wave without him,” referring to B’s series of mixtapes Coke Wave, Coke Wave 2, A Wave Called Yes, Toothy Wave and Return of the Wave.
West tweeted a nod to B’s work and the scuffle seemed to be over; that is until Jan. 27.
“Hit this kk and become yourself.” Khalifa’s tweet at 8:12 a.m. on Thursday morning seemed low-key. Fans and followers of the rapper know “kk” to be the “Blacc Hollywood” rapper’s own strain of marijuana, dubbed Khalifa Kush. Kk also happens to be the initials of West’s Internet breaking wifey, Kim Kardashian.
Egotism runs strong in West. He immediately fired back a slew of over 20 tweeted stings on Khalifa, nailing everything from the rapper’s music to his ex-wife Amber Rose to his son.
“3rd no one I know has ever listened to one of your albums all the way through,” “4th you let a stripper trap you,” and “5th I know you mad every time you look at your child that this girl got you for 18 years.”
Maybe West should’ve taken a four or five second breather before jumping to conclusions. He also said Khalifa stole his music style from Kid Cudi and tweeted what is soon to be the most meme-d quote of 2016: “You have distracted from my creative process.”
Back to Rose. West began dating Rose in 2008 and the couple was together until summer 2010. During their romance, West, no stranger to controversy even then, charged the stage at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards and interrupted Taylor Swift. An inebriated West was removed for the rest of the show.
The impromptu act of musical vigilante justice became one of the most discussed moments that year. It also officially pinned West as the most pompous artist of the generation.
After the split with West, Rose began dating Khalifa in early 2011. They couple got engaged in March 2012, welcomed a son, Sebastian in Feb. 2013, and were married in July 2013. Rose filed for divorce in Sep. 2014.
Rose decided to clapback at West after he fired shots about her and her son, saying West wished he was still with her, but in slightly more graphic jargon.
That’s just the tip of the iceberg for the drama between Rose and West. Not only is there bad blood from being exes, but Rose got into a Twitter feud with West’s sister-in-law Khloe Kardashian last year, was caught Instagram-flirting with Scott Disick, baby daddy to Kourtney Kardashian’s children, and is a close friend of Blac Chyna, who is reportedly dating West’s brother-in-law, Rob Kardashian.
Just to make it even more complicated, Chyna was engaged and had a child with rapper Tyga, who is in a high-profile relationship with Kylie Jenner, another of West’s in-laws. And people thought Lost was confusing.
Khalifa finally retorted, tweeting “KK is weed fool. Reason’s why your not wavy. Go bacc to Swish.” After realizing he had taken everything out of context, West actually apologized… in his own way at least. He deleted all the derogatory tweets towards Khalifa and said, “I’m happy that I now know that KK means weed… please excuse the confusion.. now back to #WAVES.” (Insert Kanye shrug here).
West also thought he had caused Khalifa to lose two million followers during his rant. According to Twitter statistics though, West gained 172 thousand new followers and the “See You Again” rapper gained 61 thousand new followers. A winning day for all… kind of.
Apparently trigger fingers really do turn to Twitter fingers. He followed later in the day saying he “love[s] the world bottom line and all [he] want[s] is peace and positive energy.” All the world wants though is more Kanye craziness to keep it entertained. With all of this hype, maybe West is producing the “album of the life.”
