The Multicultural Achievement Program (MAP) hosted their 29th Annual Award Ceremony on March 26. MAP honored UWG scholars as well as students from 16 high schools in the area.
MAP awarded 399 students Multicultural Academic Achievement awards at the ceremony. These awards went freshmen to senior students with a grade point average of 3.25 or higher. The Ace Award went to the junior and senior with the highest grade point average.
The Helena Harbridge International Student- Athlete Award was awarded to Elyse Boileau, an international student-athlete from North Vancouver, British Columbia, who displayed the best combination of athletic performance, class room achievement, team work, team spirit and community involvement for 2013.
MAP is an academic support program for minority students that strives to enhance the UWG experience for students by providing programs that promote academic success. Dr. Michael Horvath, Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs, opened the Multicultural Achievement Award Ceremony with a few words expressing MAP’s success and the advancements in diversity as a nation. “I was convinced that in this country, in my lifetime, we would never see a minority president,” Horvath said. He went on to say that multicultural individuals and people who promote diversity made this moment in history possible.
MAP’s guest speaker, Reginald Moore, is a Special Agent in charge of the Atlanta Field Office, was appointed to Senior Executive Service and is a UWG alumnus. Moore shared his experience as a student at the university in the 1970s. Moore encouraged students to believe in themselves and to refrain from self-doubt. “Do not let people tell you what you can and cannot do,” said Moore. Moore recommended that students surround themselves with friends who will potentially benefit them in their college career.
Moore said he was lucky because of the opportunity presented to him shortly after he graduated college. “We should define ‘lucky’ by opportunity and preparation,” he said. Moore said the he prepared himself during his years as a college student and that all the students in attendance are doing the same.
Moore’s closing remarks to the students were, “never forget the people that came before you and the challenges they undertook.”
