The National Broadcast Society-Alpha Epsilon Rho (NBS-AERho) is returning this semester after an award-winning year at the National Convention, a competition for NBS members from all across the nation. NBS is an organization that aims to enhance the development of both college students and young professionals that are interested in electronic media careers.

They also help to connect students with industry professionals and encourage members to pursue excellence in production and leadership as well as helping their community.

“NBS-UWG adheres to this mission with special attention to connecting students with practicing professionals and community service opportunities, especially those that allow members to use their electronic media skills to help others,” said Dr. Brad Yates, professor of Mass Communications at UWG and faculty advisor for NBS-UWG.

Throughout the school year, members of NBS participate in several field trips, community service outreaches and opportunities to meet and connect with media professionals.

“We try to provide some type of professional networking opportunity each month, whether we have a guest join us on campus or we take a field trip to a TV station, radio station or film studio,” Yates said.

Members of NBS-UWG participate in outreaches across Carroll County, including Taste of Carrollton, visiting animal shelters, donating to soup kitchens and Toys for Tots. Members also utilize their skills to produce videos for the Goodwill Resource Center in cooperation with the Public Relations Student Society of America and also for Teen Maze, a Haralson County Family Connection sponsored program.

NBS-UWG is lucky enough to have several prominent local and national industry professionals speak with the students. In the past, professionals from CNN, Clear Channel Media & Entertainment (94.9 FM The Bull, Power 96 FM, Radio 105.7 FM) and even Dr. Michael Green, former president of the Grammy’s, has taken time to speak and connect with the students.

A few members of NBS, along with Yates, traveled to Los Angeles, Calif. in March of this year to compete in the NBS Convention. The UWG Chapter received several awards throughout the convention including Honorable Mention for both Chapter of the Year and the Community Service Award. The UWG Chapter had finalists in three separate categories of audio commercials, music videos and academic paper.

“It was an excellent networking opportunity with industry professionals,” said Yates. “The students made great connections with electronic media students from all over the nation. This convention is a catalyst for future collaborations among these budding electronic media professionals.”

A UWG alumnus, Chad Brock, was named NBS Student of the Year 2013-2014 at the convention as well as being one of six UWG finalists in the National Electronic Media Competition. Yates was elected to the NBS-AERho Board of Governors for a two-year term.

The UWG Chapter of NBS currently has approximately 30 members and is continuing to encourage students to join. NBS is open to all students interested in the electronic media industry, no matter what their field of study may be.

NBS-UWG currently meets every other Monday at 5 p.m. in the Humanities Conference Room 153/154. The next meeting is scheduled for Oct. 6 when Jason Wynn, Senior Coordinator of Content Operations at Turner Broadcasting and UWG alumnus, will be a guest speaker. NBS-UWG also plans to tour the Turner facilities as well as visit other media companies such as iHeart Media studios and Cox Media.
