The UWG chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America offers students lifelong opportunity and professional growth, while gaining the experience and practical knowledge that public relations employers are seeking.
PRSSA is an organization for students interested in public relations and communications. The mission of the PRSSA is to advance the public relations profession by nurturing generations of future professionals, as well as to advocate rigorous academic standards for public relations education. The PRSSA seeks to set the highest ethical principles and maintain diversity in the profession.
Some students may not be aware of PRSSA or its size and popularity throughout the country, and even internationally. The PRSSA is made up of more than 11,000 students and advisors organized into more than 300 chapters in the United States and one in Argentina. PRSSA helps students enhance their education, broaden their network and launch their careers in public relations.
As many students may know, Media Day is coming up at UWG. It will be held in the campus center ballroom on Wednesday March, 6 from 8:30 AM to 1:30 PM. In its 32nd year, Media Day, hosted by the Department of Mass Communications, will welcome communications and media professionals from the area to campus to meet and network with UWG students.
The UWG PRSSA chapter will be holding its next meeting on Feb. 13, an appropriate opportunity for students who are interested in PRSSA to see how the meetings are held as well as what type of things are discussed during the meetings. Media Day will be discussed as well as further proposals on how PRSSA plans to become involved and to participate in Media Day.
Students interested in the field of not just public relations, but also mass communications and the media are especially encouraged to check out PRSSA and learn how it can benefit them in the future. Students involved with PRSSA also have the chance to earn scholarships and internships through the organization. There are many national events, assemblies and rallies held by PRSSA each year, as well as various competitions.
These are just a few of the many assets offered to students by the PRSSA. The organization is very helpful for all students—especially seniors and those on track to graduate soon—in helping them gain positive connections, as well as helping prepare students for the professional field. PRSSA also offers ways for underclassmen to build their resume throughout their college experience as well so that when it comes time for graduation, those students have a lot of experience and knowledge of the field.
Participation in PRSSA activities provides UWG students with ways to succeed and gain an edge over the competition in the professional workplace. Students interested in PRSSA are encouraged to contact Chapter President, Justin Monsewicz, at jmonsew1@my.westga.edu, or Faculty Advisor: Amber M.K. Smallwood at amksmall@westga.edu.
