SGA appoints new senators, creates seat

The Student Government Association Thursday, Oct. 3, approved several bills and announced their senator of the month.

Shavonn Bennette was named senator of the month for October for her outstanding contributions to SGA and her continued committment to the organization and the university.

Additionally, the SGA approved funding of $150 for expenses related to tail-gating festivities during the homecoming celebration held at the Athletic Complex Saturday.

The SGA also approved a measure that added three new senators to fill vacancies left by previous members. Four candidates interviewed with the association. A fourth senate seat was created to accomodate the last candidate.

SGA Speaker Ethan Brown said the senate was authorized to create the new position based on its bylaws.

The new senators are:

Kayla Heggood, a senior from Newnan studying sports management,

Elizabeth Pleasant, a senior from Decatur, Ga., studying speech pathology,

Cliff Cowart, a senior from Carrollton studying Business management and political science, and

Jonathan James, a junior from Tallapoosa studying business and marketing.

The senate attempted to move to pass a bill to appropriate $1,500 to fund promotions and related costs of an upcoming breast cancer awareness event, but the bill was sent back to the Student Life Committee after senators noted it was riddled with mistakes and errors, leading to confusion.

The bill will be re-written and presented to the senate for another vote this Thursday, Oct. 10.

The SGA meets every Thursday during normal school periods and is open to the public.
