The City of Carrollton’s greenhouse located at the Facility Maintenance Complex at the East Carrollton Recreation Center, is considered one of the city’s greatest assets. It is a hidden gem not many are aware of, yet it plays a significant role in enhancing the city’s beauty. A few years ago, tours became available for residents, giving them the opportunity to explore and learn more about the greenhouse’s operations. These tours typically occur during the spring and run from nine o’clock in the morning until noon, offering flexibility for people with busy schedules. For those who arrive early, there is a unique opportunity to walk around in peace and quiet while observing the wide variety of plants and flowers. Additionally, the amazing staff Brady Langley along with his other assistants offer detailed information regarding how the greenhouse operates.
Upon first entering the greenhouse, visitors can immediately feel the refreshing air. The environment is warm yet balanced, making it the perfect place for plant growth. As you make your way through the narrow path between the flower tables, you can see all the different and unique creations. One of the first things that stands out is the newly potted plants sitting on heating pads. Langley explained that the heating pads are used to help these plants’ soil temperatures increase, to improve faster rooting development. The greenhouse itself is specially designed to create a controlled and warm environment that supports the growth of these plants. Its plastic panels on the outside allow sunlight to be transmitted without drying out the plants. Throughout the greenhouse sprinklers are seen, these are used to maintain the plants watered. There are many features of this greenhouse that are not thought of.
However, the staff working the greenhouse go above and beyond in providing these plants with all the love and care possible. It is a full-time job that requires a lot of dedication, and this crew has years of experience in this field. What started as a small operation has gradually expanded over time, growing larger and more each year. Langley expresses his goal of introducing new and fun plant varieties which continues to add to the greenhouses appeal. Some of the plants grown there include Stone Mountain Daisy, Nightlife Red Begonia, Coleus, Sally Fun Sky Blue, and a wide range of hanging baskets plants. Walking through the greenhouse is a fascinating experience. It is an experience that allows residents the opportunity to see so many colors in different forms, from big to little plants. Having done this for a while now, Langley emphasizes his love for it and claims he takes it home with him to grow plants of his own.
This tour also provides valuable insight into how these plants are later used throughout the city. Some of these plants can be seen downtown according to Langley. Some of his personal favorites, are the Ballerina White Gauras. These are seen between the Local Ties Brewery and the AMP at Adamson Square. As show in the tour video the Ballerina White Gauras are initially smaller but turn into long beautiful white flowers that do in fact look like ballerinas. Seeing so many colors, it is amazing to see rare colors like blue. Langley claims it is difficult to make specific colors like blue, but it is not impossible. There are instances when making these colors is successful and there are also those instances in which we see other colors like purple rather than blue. This adds an element of experimentation to the work that is done within the greenhouse. Additionally, the greenhouse team proceeded to share an amazing insight not many may be aware of or noticed. With the upcoming event of America 250, which is America’s 250th birthday, this crew has grown beautifully red and white Impatiens Wallerianas. They also have dark blue plumbago which they combined all together to have the red, blue, and whites in honor of America 250. These sets are also seen downtown located outside the Local Ties. These efforts demonstrate how the greenhouse is connected to community celebrations. The green house makes a great contribute to making the City of Carrollton look more alive and fuller of colors, especially during the spring. One can often see these flowers and plants at Adamson Square near business or in front of local signage.
Overall, the greenhouse is an important asset to the City of Carrollton. Not only does it allow the city to grow its own flowers and plants, but it also supports local economy. It creates farming and maintenance opportunities and often serves as learning centers. Getting hands-on experiences allows employees to be knowledgeable in this area and provides the community with information and insights into how everything runs behind the scenes. It is more than just a place where plants are grown, it is a place of enhancement.
