A new roundabout was slated for construction at the intersection of Maple Street and Hays Mill Road starting in April 2027, per Highergov.
The roundabout was one part of an overall initiative by the City of Carrollton to transform Maple Street into a much safer road for bicyclists and walking pedestrians. The City of Carrollton was awarded a $9.2 million grant in 2024 through the Safe Streets and Roads for all program, which provides funding to local, regional, and tribal communities to improve roadway safety and prevent deaths and serious injuries on America’s roadways. It is the largest grant awarded in Carrollton’s history, per the City’s website.
The construction of the roundabouts was aimed to improve traffic flow from the University of West Georgia to downtown Carrollton as concerns about traffic on Maple Street have grown due to the influx of new businesses opening on the local roadway. Maple Street is designed as a two-lane highway due to its history as part of GA-166 before being re-designated as a local roadway.
Roundabouts are becoming more popular in the US with over 10,000 modern roundabouts in use with hundreds more being built each year according to Kittleson & Associates roundabout database. The popularity is due to many statistical benefits. According to the Federal Highway Administration, roundabouts can reduce fatal and serious injuries in intersections by 82 percent at intersections due to the requirement to slow down and yield at intersections.
The roundabout planned for Maple Street is no longer going to happen following an interview by WUTV with Carrollton City Manager David Brooks.
