2024 has been a huge year for women in film. With more movies being made by female directors movie goers are receiving more stories of feminism and the female experience than ever before. Carolie Fargeat’s new movie The Substance shows a unique take on vanity and body standards through a body horror genre. The Substance premiered at the 77th Cannes Film Festival where it won Best Screenplay and was later released in theaters on Sep. 20.

Erika L. Sanchez shook the Hispanic community and communities alike when she released her New York Times Best Seller and a National Book Award Finalist, I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter. 

Many movie goers have been excited and intrigued for John Crowley’s new movie We Live In Time since photos of leads Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield were leaked in April of 2023. The impressive filmography of both actors including classics like The Amazing Spider-Man and Little Women had people greatly anticipating seeing how well the two would work on screen together. While I am a fan of both actors and I think their performances were exceptional, I feel like the movie fell flat and failed to portray the message they intended to.

One of the best aspects of art is that an art appreciator can admire a beautiful piece of creation, while still disliking multiple elements of it. Art is open to interpretation. “Lonely Planet,” a new movie released Oct. 11 on Netflix, is a film that can be commended for its beautiful setting, yet the storyline, characters and message very much fall flat.

Kathleen Glasgow is a young adult author who is known for writing books that are difficult to read, but absolutely necessary. Glasgow does not shy away from heavy topics and intense themes. Glashow’s book, Girl in Pieces, tells the story of a broken young girl struggling to put herself back together after a suicide attempt. Her book, How to Make Friends with the Dark, deals with death and grief after the main character loses her mother. Another one of her works, You’d be Home Now, handles the opioid crisis and the lives impacted by drug addiction.
